DEF – As Head of Data Innovation at BASF what does a typical day look like for you?
Danilo – A typical day is a day where I have to think about how to change the way BASF works by using data at the core, how to elevate my team and all business areas to understand the importance of the data in order to help them achieve their goals, teach and coach form C level until baseline working people it is the most fun party of my day.
DEF – According to you, what is or has been the most challenging aspect of the digital transformation in BASF?
Danilo – A typical day is the day where I have to think about how to change the way BASF works by using data at it is the core, how to elevate my team and all business areas to understand the importance of the data in order to help them achieve their goals, teach and coach towards data analysis from a C level until base-line working people it is the most fun party of my day.
DEF – What, in your opinion, is the main difference is between a Data-Driven Enterprise and a non Data-Driven Enterprise?
Danilo – It is always about people, companies are not machines, companies are made of people and everyone, has its own way to deal with innovation, the most challenging is to show people that Digital Transformation is a way to change their lives for better, NOT still their jobs, our goal is using technologies to transform the way to do business, in other words, is to help people be more efficient at what they do best.
DEF – Why do you think that the Data is key to improve digital transformation?
Danilo – For many years we always talk as pillars of business improvement was People, Process, Technology, with it were developed system 1, system 2, system 3, and no one have thought about how we will analyze data, Nowadays with digital technology data is the core to measure and take decisions by integrating all systems plus digital technologies for the level of continuous Digital Transformation.
DEF – How do you think that the majority of the companies are prepared to achieve Digital Transformation?
Danilo – Most of the companies still in the process of engaging to the topic, some of them are very advanced at it, however, some still at PowerPoint show Uber, Airbnb use cases as magic transformation. To be a well-prepared company it is culture change first NOT a technology, apps, etc… start to solve real problems in a different way, show people, gain stakeholders and keep ongoing.
So, most of the companies are not well prepared for Digital Transformation because they are looking for technologies not how to solve real problems by using technology as a path.
DEF – At our LATM Digital Enterprise Festival you will be presenting the session “Creating A Data-Driven Enterprise”, in your opinion, which are the few foundations that need to be implemented in a company to achieve this change?
Danilo – The foundation is always about solving problems in a different way, using data following 4 common problems of all companies have:
Many systems, files, data spread all over the company, silos not integrated
A high effort for a common analysis to delivery one analysis, high effort extracting data from many systems
With all data spread all over, have data visualization platforms it is a challenge, so we have many types of reports in Excel, Qlik, Power bi, Tableau, external partners all coming for a decision make form different data sources
At least and most importantly, to predict and plan for the future in a short, mid and long term plan for business growth
DEF – What will the attending executives learn from your talk?
Danilo – They will learn to be a Data-Driven Company need to have a strategy, needs to focus where is relevant, there is a step by step to be followed and the most important Data is the core of a Digital Transformation.
Thank you for your valued industry insights Danilo, much appreciated!
