DEF: Can you tell us a bit about EDF Energy?

 

Lloyd from EDF Energy is a large supplier of electricity in the UK.

DEF: As Head of Digital and Innovative Learning what does that mean for you on a day-to basis?

 

Lloyd: My job is to understand what our long-term business strategy is and turn that into reality from a people development perspective. This might include Virtual Reality training or AI for personal development.

DEF: What brought you here? Was it your initial career path of choice?

 

Lloyd: I have a passion for people development which usually is accelerated through learning. Before joining EDF Energy I was a teacher and then teacher trainer. Learning has always been a passion of mine.

DEF: What is the best and worst part of the day for you?

 

Lloyd: The best part of my day is interacting with people and making a positive difference.

The worst is usually me rushing around – I sometimes overestimate the need for breaks throughout my day!

DEF: What makes you passionate about the world of digital and technology?

 

Lloyd: Make an impactful difference to another human being.

DEF: What song do you listening to the most?

 

Lloyd: I’m always listening to music so this is hard! At the moment and when I’m trying to focus, I’ll listen to “Chariots of Fire” on repeat. I find this brings motivation with focus.

DEF: What do you enjoy doing when you are not at work?

 

Lloyd: Still learning – I am running a podcast called “The Future of Learning” and that’s keeping me busy! I have 3 daughters and we all enjoy time together which I find peaceful.

DEF: Digital has already taken us on a significant journey both in business and in our personal lives. What big things do you think we should be looking out for in 2018 & beyond?

 

Lloyd: I believe the quote “The future is already here, it’s just not evenly distributed” is appropriate. One innovative thing to one person or company, is old news to another. That said, I think artificial intelligence is growing more and more in popularity. That term is still too loose though. I’m exploring the differences between machine and deep learning because knowing the limitations of things under the AI umbrella will determine success or not. I’m also following VoiceFirst technology. Using the Amazon Echo to make your life simpler is another technology to keep your eye on.

DEF: You are going to be speaking at our next Digital Enterprise event in London next month, there you will talk about: “Planning Innovation for People Development”, without giving to much away can you tell us a bit more about that?

 

Lloyd: Sure. Innovation doesn’t just happen. There’s a way to make it successful by being strategic but also ensuring a team is set up to deliver success. What gets measured; gets managed. This will be a key message from me.

DEF: What is the culture needed for digital transformation?

 

Lloyd: The reality that words without meaning equals nothing. For example, we’ll use the word “change” but what does that mean? I see most organisations doing things in digital transformation to alter how their business operates but their organisational structure is the same as the past. They are wanting to change “what” they do without appreciating “how” they do it will change. This causes a lot of resistance.

DEF: What happens to the Brands who can’t or won’t go digital?

 

Lloyd: They better hope their customer won’t go digital – but that’s just not going to happen. Digital done well makes a customer’s life easier. If you don’t fill that gap, someone else will.
