DEF: Can you tell us a bit about Coca-Cola European Partners?
Tim: We are the largest bottler of Coca-Cola’s portfolio of products, and the third largest Soft Drink’s manufacturer in the world. We offer consumers some of the world’s leading brands and a wide choice of high quality drinks, with or without sugar and calories.
DEF: As Supply Chain IT Director what does that mean for you on a day-to basis?
Tim: The Supply Chain in most manufacturing companies never sleeps, and as today’s Supply Chains run on Technology and IT, it means no two days are typically the same in terms of what gets thrown-up. I have a broad remit covering the end to end value chain and so work closely with many stakeholders and business partners who are running CCEP’s Procurement, Manufacturing, Quality and Safety, Logistics, Distribution and Planning activities.
DEF: What brought you here? Was it your initial career path of choice?
Tim: When I was growing up I wanted to be a marine biologist, so I’ve no clue how I ended-up doing what I do today ! However, when I graduated from university in the late nineties, an emerging trend was starting to get a lot of traction in big companies – ERP Systems. I ‘fell’ into the world of Supply Chains and Technology then, and I’m still lucky enough to be discovering and learning each day, some 20 years later.
DEF: What is the best and worst part of the day for you?
Tim: The best part of the day is getting into the operations environment of one of our factories, seeing how technology can improve the way we produce our portfolio of great products. The worst part is being sat in the back of a taxi heading to an airport!
DEF: What makes you passionate about the world of digital and technology?
Tim: I firmly believe that digital technology is going to continually disrupt and change all our lives, both professionally and personally. I also love the ‘nuts and bolts’ of how companies make things on an industrial scale. So bringing the two together in the context of the role I have at Coca Cola European Partners, is a perfect mix.
DEF: What song do you listen to the most?
Tim: Lucky Man by The Verve – reminds me of my student days with all that free time on my hands, and puts a smile on my face no matter where I am.
DEF: What do you enjoy doing when you are not at work?
Tim: Spending quality time with my young family – I have two daughters under ten. Riding my mountain bike, watching rugby and enjoying good food & drink with friends.
DEF: Digital has already taken us on a significant journey both in business and in our personal lives. What big things do you think we should be looking out for in 2018?
Tim: I personally believe 2018 for many large companies is going to be a foundation year, exploring and proving theories where Digital is concerned. I sense there’s a need for some of the emerging technologies such as Augmented Reality, Blockchain, Machine Learning etc. to become more refined and improved before becoming truly ‘mainstream’ and widely adopted. That said, companies like CCEP are definitely committed to, and using agile methods to quickly prove concepts and move into scaling them.
DEF: You are going to be speaking at our Digital Enterprise Festival in Barcelona. There you will talk about Digitally Transforming the Supply Chain. Without giving to much away can, you tell us a bit more about that?
Tim: Having only been created as a company two years ago, Coca Cola European Partners is on a big transformation journey ! Rather than just putting the basics in place, we’re also leveraging the opportunity to experiment with the latest Digital enablers i.e. Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Big Data etc. We’ll be sharing useful insights into our experience and learnings.
